Soooo….we went to the art museum on Sunday to see the Frida Kahlo exhibit (sorry OKP Philly fun day folks…. my mom had given Sasa tickets for Christmas). As we’re walking to the museum, there was a CNN election broadcast truck parked nearby. I then mentioned that I really hope they don’t try to compare Hillary to Rocky. Sasa said something to the effect of “nooo wayyyyy.”
Yes.
Gross.
I am pleased at the Philly and NYC Metro front page headlines for today.
“Hillary Compares Herself to ‘Rocky’: Let the Groans Begin”
I love this quote: “Rocky lost in the first movie,” noted Wilmington resident Laura Walsh, a Barack Obama supporter. “I hope she does, too.”
Laura Walsh, I salute you.
Furthermore, the article has this gem:
Joey Sweeney, editor of local blog Philebrity — one of the first to publicly bash Philly’s love affair with Rocky last year — said that while Rocky was the ultimate underdog, Clinton is the complete opposite as a textbook Washington, D.C., insider.
“It’ll probably blow up in her face because this is like the Bosnian sniper fire part two,” he said, referring to Clinton’s snafu last week where she said she misspoke about her 1996 trip to Bosnia. “It’s like a totally clueless, out-of-touch gaffe.”
I don’t agree with the bashing of the city’s love for Rocky (The first film’s — and to some extent the last film’s — cinamatography lovingly shows Philly in all its beautiful yet gritty splendor). But the rest of the sentiment, I dig.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports on Hillary’s Rocky-slingin attempt:
Recalling a famous scene on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Clinton said to end her presidential campaign now would be as if “Rocky Balboa had gotten halfway up those art museum steps and said, ‘Well, I guess that’s about far enough.’”
The attempt at this comparison really irks me, as we’ve established. That said, I think it would’ve came off quite nicely if she had actually ran the steps. That would’ve been kind of endearing. You can’t do the raised-fist Rocky tribute at the bottom of the steps (as seen in Metro photo). Every tourist and many residents do the run. The value would’ve been in that visual. Barack….c’mon man, steal that shit.
Disclaimer: A Kucinich supporter in ‘04, a Kucinich supporter in ‘08, I am now firmly behind Obama. While I do feel the country is long overdue for a woman president, I don’t want to see this one. Getting into all of the why-nots (Clinton) and why-fors (Obama) is another post.
